Internships at Local TV
During the fall semester of my junior year, I began my first broadcast internship at ABC6 (WLNE-TV) in Providence, Rhode Island. Being an intern during the fall in New England means that there is most likely never not going to be a day without sports.
The first day of my internship, I drove to Gillette Stadium where I got to sit in on one of Bill Belichick's press conferences and interview players in the locker room. Helping select soundbites for the 6 o'clock sportscast and setting up a live shot within a matter of minutes...I had no clue what I was going to be in store for the few months. From attending Patriots press conferences and media availability, to standing on the sidelines Sundays, to being sent out across the state to cover high school football games, learning how to write, shoot and edit highlights, to then watch my work live from the control room; I was getting the full-experience. I was given countless opportunities to practice stand-ups and learn what it means to be a sports reporter.
The most exciting sporting event I got to attend as an intern at ABC6, and still until this day, was the 2018 World Series at Fenway Park. Everything I had learned and worked for came to fruition at this moment.
At the conclusion of my junior year, I spent the summer in Dedham, Massachusetts as a Sports Intern with Boston 25 News (WFXT). This was an incredible opportunity to work for a station I had grown up watching. I was able to learn from some of the best and most experienced in the business. Being able to work in a Boston newsroom allowed me to see the difference between smaller local stations to a top 10 market in the country.
During my internship at Boston 25, I spent a lot of time watching Boston Red Sox baseball and assisting with Patriots off-season coverage at their OTA's, Mini-Camp and Training Camp sessions. During the Boston Bruins 2019 Stanley Cup playoff run, I had the opportunity to learn what it's like to work behind-the-scenes back at the station during events. By logging games, selecting soundbites and researching information for sportscasts, I was exposed to the level of detail and planning that goes into breaking coverage.
Both of my internships in local television taught me more than any classroom ever could. I was given invaluable experience in professional environments that prepared me for my upcoming career.
