Learning Outcome 1
Capable of entry-level media work in one of the major’s areas of emphasis
Throughout my four years at the University of Rhode Island, I have learned the skills and tools necessary to be a professional journalist. I've always loved learning in the classroom. It's where I developed an understanding for the rules of reporting and ethics. My entry-level journalism classes are what sparked my curiosity to get involved on-campus and pursue real world internship opportunities.

My various internship and job opportunities in sports journalism gave me a taste of what it's like to be a journalist that people can trust and rely on. This past year I've served as a reporter for Rhode Island Athletics. Whether I was covering a game, attending practice or meeting one-on-one with student-athletes, I functioned as a "one man band", multimedia journalist reporter. I was responsible for setting up my own shots, shooting highlights, writing scripts, editing footage and creating content for GoRhody.com. My video work was shared on Twitter, Youtube and occasionally Facebook. This position was designed for me to work on my craft of reporting, giving me reps on camera while generating an audience through the Rhode Island, collegiate athletics fan base.
One of the biggest takeaways I've learned throughout my short time in this industry is the power of relationships and creating connections. Working alongside several local television stations at professional, collegiate and high school sporting events allowed me to foster these relationships and share my skills. Due to this, Providence sports reporters from WJAR, WPRI, and WLNE would reach out for footage of media availability and press conferences from URI football and basketball. When they couldn't attend a game or practice, reporters would reach out to me looking for help. This footage would air on evening sportscasts.

Working in sports is a fast-paced, stressful environment where every little detail matters. My journey this past year as sports reporter has been filled with challenges and learning experiences. I've developed the skills of thinking critically, creatively and independently. Whether I'm delivering a pregame report or postgame recap, anchoring on the sports desk, or focusing on storytelling by interviewing athletes; the videos below prove that I'm capable of entry-level media work. I'm confident that I will thrive and grow in my role outside of college.
