Student Involvement
During my sophomore year at Rhode Island, I finally got the chance to be in front of the camera and truly learn what it means to be a one man band. I began working alongside upperclassmen to help produce the 5 Cent Cigar Newscast (5CCN), a digital news show that ran alongside campus' weekly newspaper.
My journey as a Sports MMJ began by covering baseball and softball, before eventually earning opportunities to cover men's basketball and football games during my junior year. This is where I learned how to write, shoot and edit my own work, conduct interviews and deliver newsworthy content under strict deadlines.
During March 2019, 5CCN sent me to cover the men's basketball team at the Atlantic 10 Tournament in Brooklyn, New York at the Barclays Center. I was able to report at the second-round, quarter and semi-finals games alongside several professional media outlets. Being responsible for creating game previews, recaps and tweeting out information in such a fast-paced, high-energy environment was an experience I will never forget.
Based on my experiences as an MMJ, I've always valued the technical support and detail that goes into making TV. In the fall of my senior year I was apart of a team that began a new student-run lifestyle, talk show known as The Daily Ram. Rather than being on-camera, I served as the director/technical-director for a semester.
Working from both a broadcast studio to remote locations across campus, being a director is challenging! I loved the pressure and control of sitting in that chair calling cameras, communicating with talent and problem solving on the spot. I learned the importance of working with a creative and reliable team. I became more comfortable in a studio with more knowledge about audio, lighting and creating great content.
As a member of various student media group on URI's campus, I feel more than prepared to enter the work force thanks to the opportunities I had on both sides of the camera.
